Vastu Purusha Mandala

There is this great text called Mayamatam on Vastu called that explains about the Vastu Purusha Mandala in every possible way. During the beginning of the Universe, God created a new creature to experiment. He ended up creating a new creature that gradually became larger and he grew up into a big creature. And, when he grew up so big that his shadow started falling on the Earth like permanent eclipse, God Vishnu and Shiva urged Lord Brahma to do something that can protect the Erath from getting destroyed from this deadly and big creature.

Hearing this, Lord Brahma realized that he had made a mistake and that he called on the Lord of eight directions called Astha Dikapalakas. All the eight Gods won over this monster and held him flat on the ground and Brahma jumped onto him on his middle. After this the monster shouted asking Brahma, why he is being punished if he has been created like this? So, Lord Brahma blessed him that he will be immortal on this Earth and will be worshipped by anyone who will build a home on the Earth. He was then called as Vastu Purusha.

And, Vastu Shashtra is the science that teaches us to follow the principles of constructing a building so that the Vastu Purusha is not displeased. These principles of directions, we are going to describe here.

Vastu purusha mandala

The diagram shown above is kwon with the name Vastu Purusha Mandala and it illustrates completely how the Vastu Purusha was put to end by Lord Brahma and 44 other Gods in a way that his head was in the Northeast and his feet was in the Southwest direction.

The above diagram has in all 81 parts and here, how 45 Gods would have hold Vastu Purusha while he was bring put to death has been illustrated. Out of the 45 positions, 32 are present in the external enclosure and 13 in the internal. Each of these Gods effects one or the other aspect of life. Like it is believed that there should not be extra pressure on central portion as that is believed to be governed by the supreme deity Lord Brahma. It is advised that it should always be kept in the open position in the form of a courtyard. The placement of each of the rooms is done in such a way that it is positively affected by the nature and characteristics of the deity in that area.

Here's how each room should be placed in a building….

Advantages of building a home based on the principles of Vastu Purusha Mandala:

Vastu explains that if a building is constructed following its principles then it ensures a healthy, wealthy and a love filled life. It helps in creating a perfectly balanced environment around that promotes a peaceful and multifold growth of the family members.

Science explains that all the five elements of nature that is believed to give all that are important for a peaceful living. The energy emanating from all those elements are fit together in order to create an environment where in humans can get the most and live happily. Also, following the principles of Vsatu ensures the proper entrance of light, proper ventilation and proper exposure to Sun's light.

Here is an explanation on how and why following the Vastu principles will help in the placement of different rooms in your home.

The logic behind the placement of a room in one or the other direction of the home is that, the supreme source of energy is Sun and it is very important for every human being to get enough of exposure to the Sun's energy. And, Vastu ensure that each of the rooms is placed in such a way that you could get enough of Sun's energy.

There are eight divisions of each of the solar days consisting 24 hours and each of these eight parts is associated with the eight cardinal directions. Sun gets placed in each of these cardinals during one of these periods. And, so the room that is used in most of the cases in those periods is placed in the corresponding cardinal.

Here is a brief of explanation on how placing each of these rooms as per the principles of Vastu will help….

Meditation room or Puja Room: (North-east)

The time between 3am and 6 am is called as Brahma Muhurta that falls just before the Sunrise. During that time Sun faces in the Northeastern part and since these are the most suitable time for meditation, yoga and performing Puja, meditation or Puja room are built in this direction.

Kitchen (South-east)

The best time for preparing meals is between of 7:30 am to 9:30 am. At this time, Sun faces in the Southeast direction and therefore Vastu teaches to place kitchen in the Southeast corner of the building. In that way the UV rays of the Sun directly falling on kitchen will keep it away from germs and other insects and keeps food protected.

Master Bedroom (South-west)

The time period that falls between 12 pm to 3 pm is called as Vishranti or the time of taking rest after having lunch. In this time period, the Sun stays in the Southwest direction and so it is advised to build the Master bedroom in this direction of the home.

Doors, Windows and Bathroom (East)

The Sun faces in the Eastern part of the home during 6 am to 7:30 am and since during this time, at most occasions we take bath, so bathroom should be placed in the Eastern direction. Also, one should make sure that there isn't any obstruction in the path of Sun's rays and it reaches to every corner of the home from the doors and windows.

Bedroom/Storerooms/ Office (South)

9am to 12 is the most perfect time for work and since during this time the Sun is in the South direction, this is considered as the most suitable direction for placement of office, bedroom or the storeroom. During noon, the intensity of Sun's light is more towards South direction, and so the Storeroom should be built in this direction so that it remains moisture proof.
