  • The temple should be constructed in such a way that every shrine is built in the Eastern direction and that its entrance is in the Eastern direction.
  • According to Vastu, the Eastern direction is considered as auspicious in the language of Vastu as Sun, the sacred God of Hindus and the giver of light energy, rises in this direction. And, that is the reason that the shrines should face the Eastern direction.

  • The area wherein shoes are kept should be built in the South direction of the building and the source of water should be in the Eastern part of the building.
  • Four main gates can be built in a temple and two of them should be in the Eastern direction while two others should be located in the Northern direction. But, if there is only one gate, it should be located in the Eastern direction.
  • One should avoid building the entrance gate in the Southern direction and the main gate should be enough bigger and stronger in comparison to other parts of the temple.
  • Windows should be built only in the Eastern direction.
  • Idols of Gods and Goddesses must be kept at a level higher than the ground level. The idols should place such that it faces in the Eastern direction but you can place the idols of Lord Dakhinamurti, Goddess Kali and Lord Hanumana such that they are facing south.
  • There should not be any commercial or residential building in front of a temple. The temple should be so built that its shadow does not fall directly on the area around the temple.
  • Any water source should be such that it is located in the Northeast direction of the temple and any over-head tank should be located in the Southwest direction of the building.
  • If the temple has any kitchen it should be located in the Southeast direction as that is the space for the fire or Agni element of Vastu.
  • The charity box of the temple should be in the North or the Eastern direction.

The most apt place for building a temple is the place where there are mountains, sea or hills located in the North or the East direction.
